There was a man who was walking along a sandy beach where thousands of starfish had been washed up on the shore.

As he looked down the beach he noticed a boy picking up the starfish one by one and throwing them back into the ocean.

He got closer and called out "Good morning! What are you doing?"

The boy paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish in the ocean. If I don't throw them back in they will die."

The man said, "Don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it? You can't possibly make a difference."

The boy listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves.

He looked at the man and said, "It made a difference for that one."
